Areas north of Mackay have been identified as most at risk from an intensifying cyclone expected to move near the Queensland coast.

Tropical Cyclone Jasper is currently a slow-moving category two weather system about 1500km northeast of Cairns, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

After forming as a category one cyclone on Tuesday, it’s expected to continue to strengthen and become a severe category three system on Wednesday as it tracks south-southwest towards the northeast Coral Sea.

Meteorologists say significant uncertainty remains about Jasper’s path, but it appears increasingly likely to impact Queensland.

“Jasper is now at category 2 intensity and is expected to become a severe tropical cyclone overnight tonight, while tracking south-southwest into the Coral Sea,” the bureau said in an alert on Wednesday.

“Jasper is forecast to reach category four intensity by Friday, thereafter some weakening may occur over the weekend.

“Jasper is forecast to gradually move on a general southwesterly track towards the Queensland coast early next week.

“At this stage, the highest risk of a cyclone impact is the region north of Mackay.”

The cyclone is in the Solomon Sea, about 290km west southwest of Solomon Islands capital Honiara, and is bringing wind gusts of up to 120km/h.

It’s moving at approximately 7km/h in a south-southeast direction.

Jasper is within Australia’s area of responsibility, meaning the Bureau of Meteorology is tasked with providing information about the cyclone.

It’s the first cyclone to form in Australia’s area of responsibility in the 2023-24 season.
