The chance of a weather system off the coast of Queensland forming into a cyclone is increasing, as forecasters warn of the possibility it moves towards the state’s north as a “severe” weather event.

The Bureau of Meteorology has on Tuesday rated the Coral Sea system as a 55 per cent — or “high” — chance of becoming a tropical cyclone from Sunday, January 21.

The forecast is an upgrade from Monday when it was rated a 25 per cent (moderate) chance of being a cyclone from January 22.

There is a chance it could become severe.

“A tropical low is developing in the Coral Sea and is initially expected to move east, away from the Queensland coast,” the bureau said on Tuesday.

“It will strengthen over the weekend, likely becoming a tropical cyclone.

“There is a chance that the system will develop into a severe tropical cyclone early next week.”

Fresh cyclone threat for Queensland as system feared to U-turn

According to the latest advice, there is a 15 per cent chance the cyclone could form on Friday.

The movements of the storm are unknown and meteorologists have reiterated warnings it could perform a U-turn and move toward the Australian mainland.

“While it is expected to remain offshore for the next seven days, from early next week there is increased variation in potential movement,” BOM said.

“It may be moving west towards the Queensland coast or it may be moving through the central Coral Sea and further away from the coast.

“There are no direct impacts expected to the Queensland coast during the next seven days.”

If it impacts the state, it would come about a month after the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Jasper caused significant flooding across the far north.
