East coast Australians are being warned to brace for a week of rain and thunderstorms, while the west is preparing for an unrelenting seven days of sun.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned southeast Queensland and much of NSW are in for six days straight of wet weather.

Parts of southern Queensland are warned of potential flash flooding, with between 60mm to 200mm of rain forecast.

The wet weather is expected to span from Brisbane down to the Gold Coast and into the northern rivers of NSW.

Meteorologist Dean Narramore warned Sydney and Canberra should also expect wet weather.

“On Tuesday, we’ll see showers and thunderstorms, some severe, continue across northern and eastern Australia with hot, dry weather in WA and mild and sunny conditions in southern Australia,” he said.

On Wednesday and Thursday, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across northern and eastern Australia, Narramore added.

The wet weather is also expected to spread into parts of Victoria and South Australia later in the week.

Into the weekend, rain and thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are expected across much of northern and eastern Australia.

“Great for those looking for rain … not so much for those harvesting this week,” Narramore said.

Meanwhile, a severe storm warning is currently in place for Queensland’s southern interior and the far northwest.

“Heavy rainfall is the primary hazard in the south, but large hail and damaging winds are also possible,” the BOM warned.

Severe heat warning for WA

In Perth, locals are preparing for at least seven days of temperatures above 30C, with the bureau issuing a severe heat warning ahead of what could be the hottest November week on record.

A top of 33C is forecast for Monday but the temperatures will surge mid-week, including 40C on Thursday.

The weekend won’t be much cooler, with 38C predicted for Saturday and 36C on Sunday.

“Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell,” the bureau said in a warning.

“Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.

“Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.

“If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.”
